Pongal Rangoli Design

This rangoli design I have drawn on my house for Pongal 2019. Pongal is the most popular festival celebrated in southern India especially in Tamil Nadu. I also love Pongal time because it is the time where people used to draw rangoli using color powder. Pongal is the Harvest festival that is celebrated in Tamil Nadu. It is celebrated in the Mid-month of January. It is also known as Sankranthi in other places of India. Different places have different names and different traditions for celebrating it. I also miss the large rangoli designs I usually make during the Pongal time. But when you live in the apartment it is very much important that you should make the smaller rangoli design based on the size of the entrance.

Usually, before marriage, I and my sister used to sit all night and draw the rangoli at the entrance of our house. That includes a minimum of 3 rangoli designs in our entrance and few designs for our granny home too. This is the time where every people in the street start to draw the rangoli at midnight since it takes a few hours to complete. I will also update my older rangoli designs I made in my Mom home in the upcoming posts.

The size of the rangoli differs from small to big based upon the size of the entrance. The rangoli pattern also varies from Dots to creative rangoli designs. Some of them also draw Pongal pots, sugarcane as the main rangoli. In recent days many creative Pongal pots rangoli are drawn replacing the traditional one.

First I started drawing using a chalk piece since any corrections can be done easily. So I preferred using chalk. But most of the time white rangoli powder is only used to draw even before we start to color. First, I made the butterfly drawing and I colored it. Then I gave the outline with the white rangoli powder which made the butterfly look beautiful.

The Next step of this rangoli is the drawing of flowers. Same as mentioned I drawn the flowers also using chalk. I have drawn only 4 flowers since my entrance can only hold up that much. I was also careful that it does not block the way to the neighbors walking through my door. This is the fact you should be considering when you live in an apartment.

Finally, The rangoli is complete and I have given bright colors to my rangoli that make my rangoli looks beautiful. The rangoli made me really happy when I was looking at it. Even my neighbors appreciated it. This may not be the big one I usually draw on Pongal days but this always my favorite one.

The main reason I choose to draw such is I always wanted to be creative and I did not want the design everyone draws on the floor. I also concern about the use of colors also. I always make a combination of the colors for rangoli and I also try to avoid the common colors that everybody uses.

You can also Have a look at my post on how to make your rangoli look brighter and unique. My festival collection rangoli topic shares the experience of the rangoli I make during the festival times and this does not have the tutorial of making it.
